Yellow Star (Free verse) by Mr Pig Yellow stars in a pit of faces,
Staring transfixed from their tomb,
At their possessions neatly stacked by âperfect mortalsâ
Suitcases aligned outside the shower room,
Emblazoned in names or chalk epitaphs,
That stands beside a leather mountain of heels.
The drone of a single shaver,
Removing the perfect hair,
That will be used for textiles to seam more yellow stars,
The sick irony of death bearing death,
And the whooping cough of a typhoid stricken child,
Walking with her mother mild,
To the room of no return.
In the shower room I sit half a century on,
Thinking of the nameless gone,
In this room I recall the Mothers,
Who would try to help their babies breathe
By making them suckle on desperate nipples,
Both dying in the shape that they lived in the womb,
Where screams turned to smoke that would bellow for hours,
I break down in the shower room.
I remain haunted by the corrugated corridors,
The squeak and lingering echo of recycled boots on shiny floors,
Where laughing Nazis would walk to block 11,
To purify Jews by liquid suffocation,
I see a name carved in to granite,
Next to rows of seven stripes until the abrupt end,
Continued on to a whole wall,
These are horrors I can never comprehend,
It leaves me sore,
From my one single day in Sobibor.

The difference between Jews and American Indians is the tribes don't fucking whine on a daily basis, and they are still piss broke and suffering. I understand your point but this was one of most brutal, fascist and mass genocides the world has seen in a so called 'civilized' world. My life experience cannot be ubiquitous with every event that has ever taken place. I am aware every country has its secrets it would rather hide, the british empire was a brutal regime, so were the Americans in destroying the native indians, the serbians and kosovans, the treatment of allied POWS in concentration camps. I have seen a very interesting true film of a jew hating jews called 'The Believer' if you ever get chance watch it. However you cannot argue that jewish children and infants too young to understand religion or politics and megalomaniacs deserved too die? How as an American did you feel to the Arabs hollering in the streets celebrating the death of the tragic people killed in September 11th? Millions of Somalians die and received next to zero news coverage, yet September 11th dominted the world stage and journalistic events for months and months so I wonder how they feel. I am ashamed to be British sometimes, patriotism is a jaded religion for the common man, you and I are priveleged and owe our liberty to all fallen in whatever war big or small. I have nothing against Jews they have not wronged me (yet) but this poem is about the human condition, courage under unbearable suffering not about a top 20 spot on poemranker.

Well, for one it's missing a contrast. You might think the Jews died karmicly unjustified but Germany was going through a major depression after world war 1, where the German people were starving, dying, jobless, and watching their country be stolen from them by the Jews, their jobs, their land, their way of life. They were infiltrated by the holy land just like the palestinians are being now. That's why when hitler came to power people sided with him, Mr. Pig, because he had a point. Do you think people would just jump on board any posse or lynch squad unless there was a reason? So why don't you mention what the Jews were doing to the Germans to piss them off so much? Or do you even know? My friend if you are going to expose evil, do it right, do you think the devil was kicked out of heaven because he was entirely wrong and without a good argument? You're wrong. Don't shave evils face and put it in a tux with a devilish mustache pull with no back story. The Jews died horrifically and they should not of had to die like that, but you know what? they should have been a bit more sensitive to the peoples struggle in the country the were in. They crossed the picket line and took peoples jobs, they starved familys out and made the German men feel impudent in a time when most German men were dead from the first war. It's was a horrible tome and the Jews migrated in by the millions and made a serious situation much worse, but of course history books barely mention that. Point being Mr. Pig the German people struggled too we are after all discussing revenge, stupid one sided pent up frustrated revenge. That's when women and children suffer the most for the down right impudencce of men. Now open your eyes and just for one second imagine that the child is someones you care about. Yes I am proud of my Origins from Greece, South America, Scotland, but I am mostly German From the Ludeman's and the Laasch's. I agree Durt that Schindlers list, The Uprising, And the pianist have raised the issue as far as a mainstream audience would accept it but considering the scale of murder I would say a crappy god sprayed statue is deserved for the way it was portrayed. I mean Schindlers list was a 3 hour film and as most people would know Paramount Pictures and Universal etc would take a lot of convincing to release a 3 hour film (profit comes to mind) BUT if they mentioned the Jews pissing the Germans off it would be a 6 hour film and widely regarded as missing the key point.

I have some sympathy with Horus's point. It seems that the struggle in the Middle East at the moment is the result of the Jewish people having single-mindedly failed to learn from their own history of the last 50-60 years. Yes the Holocaust was an absolutely foul, vile, depraved event in history - and let's not imagine that the Germans were alone in their views, there were plenty of proto-Nazis in Britain, France, Italy, Spain (and the US - the KKK) who also had blood on their hands. However, I think the point of history is not to labour one event, one people's history, for the purpose of eliciting merely pity or horror (or, for that matter, Academy Awards). The point is to learn from it, to move on, to try to make the world progress in some way. Both Horus and Mr Pig have talked with some pride of their backgrounds, have distinguished different strains of identity, different ethnic groups. Everybody needs to know where they come from, but an obsessive attention to ethnic detail, to the rights and wrongs of past members of particular groups generations ago, is where all the trouble starts. What does it matter if your great-great-grandfather was a black Scotsman from Wales? It matters because it affects how you live now, how you understand the world; it should not be used as some kind of badge of honour. I think a person deserves special treatment not because of who their parents were, but because of what they do with their lives. Racial division is the biggest problem the human race faces, because it threatens to destroy us.
A small historical fact to add to the German/Jew argument - a lot of right-wing aggression towards the Jews was centred around a book called 'The Protocols of the Zionist Elders', which purported to have been produced by rabbis and leading Jews and which spoke of a conspiracy to take over the world. It was a forgery produced by European anti-Semites in the late 19th century. I don't think Hitler's rise to power is quite so easily explicable by the ambitions of the Jews. Anti-Semitism has a far longer and ignobler history than that, and you have to remember that Germany had been shafted in the Treay of Versailles by the very unJewish (and also fairly anti-Semitic in places) British, US and French governments.

4) I am not conceited, I'm just more aware than your normal Joe, and I wouldn't torture anything, being a survivor of torture myself. To become that would be my worst nightmare. i am debating the fact that your poem doesn't include anyone else but the Jews and the Nazis black and white, if you would of had an italian girl singing to cheer them up before dying, or a gypsy still hustling incarcerated it would have been contrasted and brought humor and hope to an impossible situation, and show your audience that you're not just writing this because everyone will give it tens out of guilt.

1) I think I am Horus8, a magic name I chose for special reasons some might unriddle when I'm dead. 2) I did not think your poem was bad. You are a good writer it would be hard for you to write something bad. I said that to the normal poet it would be confusing because of the language, place, and terms you used both metaphorically and up front. Because, it's a muddy surface. You follow what all of our text books taught us perfectly and there's nothing new or different about your observations, and poets are experts at putting a newlight or twist on an old dance, but you didn't. i'm surprised there wasn't a lampshade, or a delousing, or a train car with eyes and hands. Your approach and mood is also very rigid and bias. Good writers use research and undiscovered angles and data to their advantage, you didn't. Sometimes the best way to define pain and suffering immeasurable. Is to contrast it like in that movie "Life is beautiful" or my favourite Lina Wertmuller's "Seven Beautys" where this Italian ladys man gets thrown in a concentration camp, and what ensues is just a perfect example of what my point to you is.

I even take a cheapshot on the dark one in it. Debating good... Agreeing bad... by the way, I hope you'er not tired, because I was writing left handed while debating you. My right hand is teaching my son had to read. i'm so happy, i got him into one of the best K-5 schools in Southern California. 800.00 a month but it's worth it. And he's only three going on four. I'm so very proud of him, and glad had the time to home school him for this last year. He's a beautiful wiz. My boy, my baby boy's going to school. I'm so excited.
