Re: a comment on Now That's What I Call Music Vol. 1,087 by Nicholas Jones 14-Jun-04/8:53 AM
What have golf clubs got to do with anything?
Re: a comment on Lovely as a Lapland Night: Sort of a Sonnet by Nicholas Jones 26-May-04/6:50 AM
Well, it's certainly a pseudo-sonnet. I'm glad you like the colon thing, it's supposed to be slightly scientific and technical. Don't ask me what the title means though.
Re: a comment on Lovely as a Lapland Night: Sort of a Sonnet by Nicholas Jones 26-May-04/6:32 AM
You could argue it's not quite a sonnet because the now: and so: things often add extra stresses to the lines, which aren't always proper iambic pentameters.

I like the use of the colon. It suggests a sense of cause and effect, and messes about with the rhythm.

Have you been watching Cavanagh QC?
Re: a comment on Re-drafting by Nicholas Jones 21-May-04/4:24 AM
It felt amazing, actually. I got presented with cheque for 250 dollars at a fancy luncheon at the SCMLA convention, where I got a huge slab of beef with two pieces of potato. I travelled to Arkansas (which is a long way from Swansea) to talk about an obscure Welsh poet. Plus it looks very good on my CV and allows me to impress people at parties.

I am slightly perturbed as to how you found this out and whether you are somehow electronically stalking me.
Re: opening time? by wormsy 12-May-04/3:09 AM
I've always assumed that, in the original, the half rhyme was meant to imply that really Dr. Foster had stepped in a piddle right up to his middle, and it was in fact a sewage related incident.
Re: Sonnet on an Operating Table by Sasha 12-May-04/3:06 AM
This good, I like the attempt to bring in the sounds of the situation. And it makes me think of 'Lady Godiva's Operation' by the Velvet Underground, which is a great song.
Here comes the moment of great decision
As the doctor is making his first incision.

Diolch yn fawr.
Re: a comment on Style / Ffordd by Nicholas Jones 12-May-04/2:58 AM
Ysgrifennais i yn yr iaith achos dw i'n dysgu Cymraeg. Dw i'n dysgu nawr ers tua dwy flynedd. Dw i'n eisiau gweld os dw i'n gallu ysgrifennu yn ail iaith.....probably this is riddled with grammatical mistakes - mae'n flin 'da fi. Feel free to correct the poem if it doesn't make sense.

Dw i'n gwneud PhD yn llenyddiaeth o Gymru yn Saesneg. Ac mae diddordeb mawr gyda fi yn llenythiaeth Gymraeg. Dw i'n lico Gwenallt a Waldo Williams.
Re: Epitaph by philn 7-May-04/6:56 AM
Needs work, but I like it. It is the lot of the middle class to be ashamed of who they are - something not true of the poor or the rich. It is the bourgeois burden.
Re: a comment on The Influence of Anxiety by Nicholas Jones 7-May-04/6:54 AM
Why can't poetry reflect on ideas, not just imagery or feelings? Yours is a fundamentally anti-intellectual position. And how do you know what poetry is anyway? Like Wittgenstein said, there are things we recognise without being able to define.
Re: a comment on The Influence of Anxiety by Nicholas Jones 7-May-04/6:48 AM
This is not an essay. And if you think it isn't poetry, you're defining poetry in a particular manner, which is precisely what pissed me off in the first place.

And I don't suppose anybody has noticed the reference to Pound's Canto XXXVIII, have they?
Re: a comment on The Influence of Anxiety by Nicholas Jones 7-May-04/6:46 AM
Bloomsday is the day in 1904 on which Ulysses is set. But of course it links to Harold Bloom and antithetical criticism too.
Re: Samurai by SupremeDreamer 4-May-04/2:22 AM
Have you been watching Kill Bill? This is delightfully absurd in the same manner.
Re: Jesus-f-ingChrist I'm Sober by embersandenvelopes 1-Apr-04/7:33 AM
Why do you feel the need to censor your own use of the word 'fucking'? Are you so ground down by the repressive culture of your country you can't even bear to type it out properly?
Re: a comment on Style / Ffordd by Nicholas Jones 30-Mar-04/3:58 AM
That is fantastic. Do you know any other languages? Chinese would be fun.

I wonder if the different languages affect the meaning of the poem. Now there's something to contemplate.
Re: a comment on Style / Ffordd by Nicholas Jones 26-Mar-04/1:42 AM
But I can't speak Spanish. Only Welsh, badly. If you want to translate it into Spanish for me, go for it. The second verse paragraph says the same thing as the first one, but in Welsh.
Re: a comment on Windfarm by Nicholas Jones 5-Mar-04/4:16 AM
The repeated as-s were deliberate, but maybe they don't work. I dont think on the past tense it would have quite the same effect. The phrase about the news is fairly odd, but again that's deliberate, trying to find slightly off kilter ways of saying things. But I'm glad you liked it, and thank you for your constructive commetns.
Re: Insomnia by dreamsdiefirst 16-Feb-04/7:08 AM
There's nothing like a good poem about insomnia. And this is nothing like one. Bomm and, indeed, boom, as Basil Brush might say.
Re: a comment on Notes toward a possible poem by Nicholas Jones 6-Feb-04/6:57 AM
It isn't supposed to be easy. But I'm glad you liked it.
