I was trying to figure out the rhyme scheme. I see in the first two stanzas you rhyme lines 2 and 4. Then a five line 5th stanza with a rhyme in lines 3 and 4.
was this the plan?

Caught up in worrying about dying, and coping with change in all aspects of culture and technology, never helped anyone's disposition... but I agree that it is an avoidable trap.

I disagree with your premise. I am sorry you aren't aware of many old men that don't fit this stereotype.
I'll try not to write about a woman's relationship with her mother to avoid the same trap.

just leave out the word subtler, or quieter, in line seven. it shortens the line a bit, but gives it a good rhythm.

most generals I've seen (excluding Stormin' Norman) are not fat.. they are quite trim, in fact.
We all have to die. Nobody makes anybody enlist in the armed services anymore. It's like saying "My life is not worth preserving" when you sign up.
