Re: A Book's Plight by amanda_dcosta Dovina 17.255.240.6 25-Jan-06/11:11 AM
Maybe you mean it as metaphor, but I doubt it. Seems an old man would ponder Jordan's River and wish he'd been read, absorbed, and written. Instead, he's just tried to make facinating and new what was neither. Elderking's recent poem is like this in feeling.

Yes, I feel it. I feel your part, or the part of your old man in the poem. "your arrival came too late" could be just "you came too late" I think. I love when I feel a poet knows what he's portraying, and I love this.

Just claim insanity. The govt should help you from then on. I know cases where thieves and murders claim insanity putting the shrinks and lawyers in a fix. You could try that. but not until you've paid my 100 bucks.

I find it funny. Too many words though, agreeing with ecargo. Starting with "there" seems better as "a sill hides neatly." "it's" is its, a common mistake. A story poem like this is better said with verbs simply used in simple sentences, and I think with minor changes you can do this.

Yeah, several have said similar things. Thanks. I've already revised it, and could ropost, but usually don't. I find it more useful to incorporate any insights or angsts into the new thing.

"Don't stand. Don't stand so close to me."

This piece is written well, although there's times of break in flow and idea. Maybe with a bit of rearrangement of words you could do better.

I'd have to hitch a ride with my old boss Subhash to India, who by the way is in more need of a psychiatrist than me.

Zodiac,Here in India we are one billion people, and even a small minority could mean about a million people. So Christians do occupy a large portion, enough to engulf you in your neighbourhood. Both, in Kerala and here in Goa, there's a huge Christian population that I don't see sadhus walking about on my way to work (infact a huge miraculous church is right opposite the institute), or even hear a single muslim call over a loud speaker. Believe it or not, that's not how we see it here, though its painted like that across the seas. India is very tolerant to religions, and you would be surprised to find the world's largest christian retreat centre here in India, in my state - Kerala, and pretty close to where my home is. What we call it here, though, is 'unity in diversity'. So there's no such thing as a non-christian country. Its more like a multi-religious country. Maybe I could take your tip and turn this into a piece of art someday. Thanks.

No, but I was told he was one of the best. I was only 15 at the time.

Did you check out his journals and see if he became rich? Your name could do wonders.

I did. He watched me draw for ten minutes and then prescribed me vitamins.

Well, this was more like- done at the spur of the moment. I thought of something and got connected and one to one the piece seemed to flow. Too simple and kiddish - but then, makes me also feel nostalgic about a lot of things gone by, stories that the book of my life would tell.

That was a psychologist. Try having a round with a psychiatrist.

Not yet. I've always wanted to, but, to be honest, before Jordan I was a little scared of India. Now nothing scares me. I think I mentioned this, but in grad school I took a really cool class on Indian Lit - Rushdie, Rohinton Mistry, Arundhati Roy, Amitov Ghosh, Bapsi Sidhwa, Anita Desai, and my personal favorite, R.K. Narayan. Most of what I know about India comes from them, one way or another.

This sounds like somebody typed up the notes from a therapist's notepad. The only good part is the last stanza, because it posseses a modicum of originality...the rest is one inflated cliche.
