Taffy (Free verse) by knickytoy
We would begin with wishes. Bubbling up, as in boiling sugar; The hot, glossy bubbles of an unformed sweet, beautiful, but looking nothing like salt water taffy, Are pulled, broken, stretched and dulled, So dull they become reality And no one is really happy.

Up the ladder: Hard Times
Down the ladder: Flowing river

I like your central image a lot, but I'm afraid I don't know what taffy is - like toffee maybe? Excuse my ignorance, I'm English... I like it though.

"so dull they become reality." yikes. your reality can't be that dull or you couldn't write any poetry, i'm guessing. this depressed me a little, so it must work. nice. keep it up, or Z will start throwing barbs.

BUT WHAT IS TAFFY? Please!

Taffy, often called salt water taffy though lord knows why, is a very chewy, soft, pastel hued candy made of sugar. It has a consistancy similar to gum but it dissolves eventually. It can pull the fillings out of your teeth.

taffy is a candy traditionally made with sugar and salt water. boil it down let it cool, pull and stretch it--wrap it in wax paper, and sell it to tourists. see: http://www.mtnlaurel.com/Recipes/taffy.htm or http://homepages.skylink.net/~skaarup/pages_candy/candy_09_taffy.html

Hey thnaks for that. I don't think we have this in Britain at all but it looks delicious - related to toffee, but the salt water component is unique. Yummmmm. Nearly as good as dirty toenails.

Pretty good stuff. Are you really z's friend or are you z. Do you garden at night? Are you prettier than she? I need to know these things before we go on. Anyway, minus the fact I tripped up over the caps on each line except for beautiful, which I thought was unnecessarily blatant, this is a fine piece.

knicky-t's one smart cookie. she's a radcliffe girl. i went to art school, 'nuff said. but i still beat her at scrabble last night. (we take turns winning, i guess) listen to me, answering for her. we are both gardeners; we are creatures of rivalling beauty; and, i, at least, could give a crap about caps. it's the alliteration and the assonance that i'm on about, p&k. (sorry if i answered for you, knicky-t)

Do you scrabble in the nude?

Heavens no. We cook a decent meal and have desserts from France when we Scrabble. Zin and I used to work together. Those were the days! We would argue over who was more popular with the customers.

and we put a fairly decent dent in that chardonnay, even without katpez's help.

When I feel like that I go to York beach and ride the coaster, build sand castles and gorge myself on the peanut butter taffy made right there on the board walk. I come home feeling all shiny, and new again. Great poem! 10/10

Sticky. Good, because it's not been pulled too far.
