Quevedo: Psalm (Sonnet) by Sasha
Translated from the Spanish of Francisco de Quevedo "Miré los muros de la patria mía..." I viewed my homeland’s walls and collonade mighty before, now mouldering away, worn by impending time whose slow decay the valor left in them could not evade. I went afield and saw the sun that made a drink of streams no more in ice’s sway, the cows that groaned of how the light of day was stolen from them by their mountain’s shade. Entering my house I saw it wore the wares of ruin and disuse, my shepherd’s crook more bent and less emboldened. In its sheath I felt my sword surrender to the years and there was nowhere left for me to look that was not a reminder now of death.

Up the ladder: As You Are
Down the ladder: No one's Victory

Wow, very cool, very timeless and timely, but is ancient feeling none-the-less. Seems to speak from past to those of now and the future...thanks for sharing!

A Psalm and a Sonnet. Unique. Although I can't see how this supposed psalm praises god.

Nice trans. though.

Good question. I'd ask Quevedo but he's a bit incommunicado.

I thought with your ample ability to summon the spirits of bygone poets you'd be able to contact him from the netherworld.
Maybe he worshiped death. The first goth poem.
By the way you got me really interested in those French Symbolists now.

Well now I know whom to translate.

Pretty and a good translation but once again, I just don't think you should get votes for a translation. I stand by it and don't vote.
