Shame (Free verse) by Joe-joe
Shame is my best friend. For when I stand at its edge And it casts its dark shadow upon me I know that You are near. That cold and damp chill fills me. And I am frozen with fear For I know my next step may be my last - And that the time we’ve spent together May have been for no good cause. But You bring that darkness upon me And rescue me time and again As shame has laid a path to Your door And I who live blindly in the shadows Move ever closer to Your Light.

I presume that "You" is God and this poem is a prayer. I don't go along with God bringing darkness upon us and then rescuing us from it time and again, but I won't hold that against you. 9

The shadow of darkness cast from ones shame is a gift. It reminds us of just how far we've drifted from our spiritual nature and how removed we are from the path of life that leads to true freedom and peace. I know I'm leaving myself open here for those who might argue that "shame" is a cultural based emotion that is relative to ones customs and system of belief. But I do believe there is a truth that resonates in all beings and it is to this universally experienced truth that this poem speaks. "You" is God...however you define him/her/it....as a conscious life force or an unconscious source of energy.

so we must sin just a little bit to renew our relationship with God? Unless you are feeling shame at simply contemplating a bad action. Which would mean to get close to god you had to contemplate bad things. But what if contemplating bad things was a deliberate ploy to get close to god.

There is this girl in class, and every time we pick partners for study noeone picks her. But she says she likes that because she can work with me (who also has no mates). She could have just picked me in the first place rather than wait for the dark shadow of non selection couldn't she?

I never said that we must sin...but when we do sin it is shame that leads us back to God.

It's not shame that leads you back to God after you've sinned. It's a fear that he's going to burn your ass if you don't.

I think it is pretty fucking good. I like the way you cast shame in a postitive light. Though, frozen with fear, and the religious overtones detract. but what the fuck do I know? Nothing. ANd yet i wield a vote as sharp as any other....aint democracy grand?
