I suggest that new poemranker users should be unable to post in any of the new categories (cinquain, prose_poetry, translation, etc.) until they have "unlocked" them by reaching certain milestones, such as:

1. voting or commenting on 100 poems
2. being members longer than 2 months
3. maintaining an average of, say, 5.8 or higher for a set time
4. or something else which I can't think of now, like maintaining a low GAYNESS QUOTIENT or posting a long well-received poem on a topic of our choosing.

This could have the double advantage of giving new users some incentive to not post their awful "lyrics" and logout without participating AND keeping poemranker from being overwhelmed with horrifying metaparademimetahaikus or whatever, since users couldn't have access to them until they've proved their maturity.

Of course, they could merely post their Babelpoems or Equidistant_letter_hidden_acrostics as free_verse anyway, but I suspect they'll be excited about unlocking the secret poemranker levels because that's what people like to do: unlock things. Don't ask me why.

what would be the point--oh, you're allowed to write free verse, but not in strict forms? isn't that assbackwards? fuck the rules, i'll do it my way--but, hey, look, i can learn to work withi restrictions once i'm good enough?

also, the maintaining an average thing works great if you keep your mouth shut and don't piss off someone with, say, 8 or 9 user names. i invite you to visit the voting history of some of my poems to see what i mean.

i agree that the 'unlocking'/solving thing is a good idea; i just don't think that that's the way to go about it.

i think that maybe you gain points by voting; i think there needs to be some way to determine the way you vote--do you spend more than 3 seconds on a page once it loads? do you vote everything a 0? a 10? a 7? a 5? because if you're only voting to rack up points, that defeats the purpose here--

once you rack up an extra x points, you get a free pass to post an extra poem outside the normal strictures. you put more into the community, you get more time at the podium.

that sort of thing.

There is an obvious solution. Institute the MATURITY HARNESS. Only poetes who display the proud shackles of the HARNESS can access the inner sanctum of poemranker and the new special skills it furnishes. An advisory panel should be set up to decide who is to be strapped into the HARNESS. The panel should consist of nentwined, -=Dark_Angel=- and dougsoderstrom.

Anyone who considers themselves Mature must wear it.

So, limit people to 1 user name.

I like the unlocking idea.

I'm not sure what the prize should be though, I mean - why does anyone care if they can't post a cinquain (or call it a cinquain since they could simpley make a cinquain and call it free verse).

What was the question?
