The Messenger (The Unreplaceable And Greatly Missed Mr. Mercury) (Free verse) by anagram
You were there when youthfully My judgement was wrong To cool my hot water With the sound of your song And when adolescent heartbreak Had left me to weep You were there with your melody To soothe me to sleep You were there to inspire me When left with no hope To uplift my soul And to help me to cope And when highlights and sunny days Came to an end You were there as a soulmate A star and a friend You were there when the parties Had faded to dull To rock them and roll them Back from their lull And when later we'd perform Poor party skits You were there while we Shamelessly murdered your hits You were there when Africa Needed a lift And the whole world could see That you had a gift And when they criticized Each turn was assessed You were there when they Acknowledged you as the best You were there and you held me In the palm of your hand Among eighty thousand At your command And when we called For more and yet more You were there to deliver Majestic encores I was alone when they rang To say you had died With a lump in my throat And tears in my eyes And when I looked through The posters, clippings and scraps You were here, but you weren't Maybe, perhaps I'm alone when I listen In serious thought To your life and your work And the joy that you brought And when I'm down And trouble is near I listen and know You'll always be here. R.I.P. Great Man Thank you for doing what you did and letting me share. CSN 12/01.

Sorry had to post this deeply sentimental and personal work. Thanks for going easy with first grading and comment.

I realize this is first grading, and the sentiment is quite "nice", but so are the trite thought of the emoting teenagers on the site and this poem is about at that level.

PAKI, isn't it about time you stuck a fucking sock in it? Thanks, Anagram, for a well worded tribute. I still work through Tie Yo Mutha Down to loosen up on the git. A, do they really batter and deep dry candy bars in Scotland?

Glad you liked it P&K.

Perhaps didn't word that very well.I was responding to a criticism of my rhyming ability from one who seems to only write open verse. I enjoy all forms but prefer Rhyming poetry.

Do you have an affront against criticism? I am not making a personal attack like many on this site Frass. You are all beautiful people. If you do not want anything said about a poem, don't post it. So, I am sorry I cannot sugar coat everything or follow the writer of triangle and cello poems all over the site ogling. I just try to call it like I see it.Freddie Mercury was great and writing a poem expressing that, no matter how sentimental, is a "nice" gesture. But just because you do a sweet tribute does not make it a good poem.

Know you were talking to Frass P&K but just for the record I can take criticism and appreciate your taking the time to read the poem and offer your valued opinion which was along the lines of what I expected.

Hey , well I guess you were at this poem first, but I cannot control the random file. Plus, I cannot figure who is who anymore (maybe it is this air in Colorado - what say you Venus, how do you breathe here). I miss Misery. Hours8, D.A., you, Doylum -- isn't it all the same.

Alright, 11am in VA, I'm up and doing what??? Refinishing my '59 Melody Maker, like I should? No, I'm logging back in to this damnable site. Thanks, Bachus, for a comment unusual for you, cogent, referential, intelligible; as a musician, do you know Every Body Gets Drunk At Elections? PAKI, I finally read some of your poetry; I like it much better than many of your wretchedly shallow comments. Frankly, I'd love to read more from Anagram; dude, I'm scots-american, I WILL visit the old country, it's gonna happen.

To P&K, one eventually becomes accustomed to the lack of oxygen up here. You will soon begin operating on a new and exciting level of consciousness. 6/10 for the lovely tribute. mama mia.

Venus, I must go home, actually I am today after taking a look at them big hills you have. I was hanging out with your ex-gov (romer) last night and the new cancer stricken one. Poor fella. But he is a Republican. Cocktail parties make me dizzy.

P&K, I wouldn't concern myself too much about the poor fella; the occasional basal cell has become a badge of honor for those happy golfer republican types. And I'd ask you to kindly keep my big hills out of this.

I forgot that's what happens you write a really long word, and since you can't delete your own comments there's nothing I can do about it.

That's cool, time to hit scratcher anyway before I can see through 360 degrees.Where I'm going and where I've been.

I know someone who hates F. Mercury with a passion. Perhaps I should give you his email address and you can have a huge argument?
[n/a] anagram @ | 29-Aug-02/6:51 PM | Reply
No no. Even in death the great man can fight his own corner. He certainly had his faults but his genius far outweighs his failings.

Oh! I thought you spoke of a futbol Mr. Mercury. As far as the poem goes I am learning as you have taught. This is far from good, but the sentiment is genuine. I'm curious, in a professional way, hows the state of homo-phobia in Scotland? My un-informed guess would be that you'd feel reluctant to praise Mr. Mercury.
[n/a] anagram @ | 31-Aug-02/6:18 PM | Reply
If you know nothing about Queen then, with the greatest respect, you're not really in a position to comment on the poem.I am staggered if my understanding is correct that you think for some reason that Scotland is a more homophobic country than any other and would be intrigued to hear why you would think this.
[n/a] god'swife @ 209.179.213.120 | 31-Aug-02/6:25 PM | Reply
I don't believe that. It's just this country is so homophobic, and I want to get a feel for how things are in your neck of the woods. I think of Scot's as these great Bruts with big hands a la Sean Connery, so my mind draws conclusions that you as a nation, (that sounds funny doesn't it) might be a little uncomfortable with it. Kilts aside.

Scotland is no different to any other country with regard to most things. There are bigots,homophobics,murderers,psychopaths,ante-semetics,nationalists,unionists,maniacs and a lot of undesirables but there are also an awful lot of nice, proud, sentimental, understanding, concerned, patriotic and welcoming people who I am happy to share this small but beautiful land with. Each has his own opinion but as a nation I think we stand with the rest of the world on tolerance and understanding being paramount in order to progress.(God I could be a politician)(maybe not - lying does not become me)

God maybe you could be a poet. They are after all the true statesmen. I'm beginning to think actions speak more poetry then words. Especially in your kind case.
