Elephant Man (Free verse) by Kitch
He sleeps on the bus to escape reality. Hoping his dreams will be immortality. People ridicule him as lonely as creepy, He is a harvest of conversation. On a near full bus, Take a guess where a seats free, A single space is segregation. The elephant man is aware of their jibes. He thinks about it for hours at home, Then he cries, And cries alone. The elephant man is my friend, We sometimes talk, he’s alright, But with insults too strong to defend, You tend to give in, to whats wrong and right. Its late now, And I’m coming back home, On a near full bus, he sits alone, Two faced people squeak like mice, And elephants fear them, Because of their size. Stand above them Elephant man, Try to love them, Show you don’t give a damn. Stand above them, Or stand upon them, If they wrong you, Try to wrong them. The Elephant man found life too tough, His life was filled with too little love, I saw a police car outside his home, He took his life and died alone. And the people who teased him are now so quiet, For the object of their bullying has died, And I walk over to where he once sat, Wanting his seat to be occupied. He’s safe now, and can sleep in peace, Where cruelty and ignorance will cease.

Down the ladder: smile
