Form Without Substance (Free verse) by Quarton
Rain beats down in nature's cadence,
forming tiny craters on the pond's surface;
dancing in and out of existence
in orderly randomness while chaos weaves
its pervasive web of uncertainty known.
Form and transformation, substance and emptiness,
all gateways to duality's illusion;
unspoken words heard over claps of silent thunder.
Rhythm slowing as the rain gradually abates
in sudden cessation, clouds thickening
in emerging blue skies as all is changed
while remaining unchanged and immutable.
Suddenly, the Jester appears, laughing
in solemn silence as a tear is shed,
sliding gently down his cheek, merriment tempered
by the lone teardrop, laughter's embodiment to form,
abstract yet precise, symbolic in its irrelevance,
intentional but without purpose.
Skies clear, sun resplendent in approaching darkness;
tiny droplets cling to tree leaves,
falling to the ground in patters of melodic silence.
Fresh washed flora covered with grime,
the stench of death rising in the fragrance
of spring flowers, gently swaying in winter's
harsh, frigid gale.
All things are transformed yet remain forever the same;
death must be experienced to know life,
the only finite certainty--uncertainty.
All form exists in the absence of substance while
the eternal music plays in silence. We look outwards,
searching in vain as the cosmic dance continues.
In finality, there are no dancers--
only the dance remains.
