Lavendar Gate (Other) by <~>
A place that is ours, but never was Kind hands have stayed the hours here Sounds of the street ascend and fade The one I love lies near I sit at table and think and write And listen to footsteps below The house is settling for the night But still, I seek to know The green-swathed walls of our attic keep Remind me of someone I used to be The church bell tolls each hour anew And now, my dear, I turn to you A fellow journeyman on a quest Our paths have joined, and here we rest

As usual, graceful and gracious. And slightly medieval here - I think it's the 'kepp' that does it.

That's 'keep'. Sorry.

Lovely. "Green-swathed" & "attic keep" seem slightly pretentious in this setting. Stanza 1 has a simpler voice.

yeah. but this is and oldie, dredged up. it's a decade old. the suite was done up in william morris green wallpaper, and it was a garret, so it fits. 'lavendar gate' was a b&b in marblehead, mass. it's now defunct. it was in an old parson's house, right next to the church...

oh! So the place itself was a little overdone for it's setting. You establish the sense of quiet late evening very well. I picture you in flannels.

yes. it was run by anglophiles who subsequently moved to england. it was very much a literary romantic's dream-come-true
