The Annual January Thaw (Free verse) by Dovina
Arousing hope,
tempting young hikers
to let down their guard
so he can kill them,
natural selection
sends the unwary out in tennis shoes
to lose their senses in watery snow.
Thus he
reduces the optimist population,
promoting survival
of embittered stoics
who believe he is against them.

I remember hiking, not in January (May I think), when there was no snow at the bottom of the mountain so I wore hi-tops on a whim - mistake since I was soon tramping through snow...
crappy snow. Good poem.
