FOR PEOPLE JUST JOINING THE CONVERSATION:
It's been proposed that we supplement the kinda useless and arbitrary Top 20 listings by having users post their own, subjective Top 10 lists (but probably not Bottom 10 lists). Here's an idea of what it would look like: http://www.poemranker.com/poem-details.j

re page length: Even a page of twenty Top 10 lists couldn't couldn't be longer (or take longer to return) than the old Users list, could it?
Maybe the main top 20 should incorperate poems saved to the favorite list in it's caculations.
I don't know. I've put poems in my Favorites before only because I like their comments. Sometimes a poem piques your interest or you want to remember it so you mark it as a favorite. I really think favorites should be considered separate from the poems you think are the best.
Ok. So like a whole seperate catagory for the top ten as apposed to reworking the favorites list. Cool.
Best ideas I've heard in a while. Also, the banishing of anonymous votes might keep the Top 20 poems page a little more where it should be, so I guess you could just leave that as is.
The users top 10 is a great idea...maybe there could be a stiplulation on it...like, I don't know, you have to have been a member for 6 months...or have posted or commented a certain amount..I don't know..just a thought..I'm guesing there would have to be some sort of stipulations on it if every Tom, Dick and Harry that showed up starting doing it...they might not though.
Or maybe the "Best" page could be a reflection of the poems that are on the most peoples "top 10" lists. That would keep you from even having to get rid of anonymous votes and if people can only have one top 10 list, it would be harder for people to 10-vote themselves into the best poems page.

I have voted 10 on the poems that I consider best. All I'd have to do is pick the top ten from these. (Unless you mean that my top ten are to be only my own poems.) Other rankers use their 10-votes more frivilously, and would probably rank their top ten's likewise.
Yes, you have many more than 10 ten-votes. No, a new user wouldn't immediately find the best poetry (or even what users consider the best poetry) on the site by checking your voting record. That's the point. Some rankers would rank frivolously. Their lists would immediately seem frivolous to new users, who would then presumably look at other people's top 10 lists. At least the whole top 20 wouldn't seem frivolous, which it does now. Stop being such a snot. Please.

She said she likes me "in a way, but not necessarily *that* way". And what have you got? A terrier, I expect.

1. POEMTITLE - STYLE - AUTHOR - RANK
Poemtitle, style, and author would be linked, of course. Along with the user who'd posted the list. Top 10s would be editable and deletable by their posting users. Yes, it would make a long page, and maybe hell in programming terms. (I know you have to base page content on the amount of time it takes to put all the information together, like Search returns, but I'm fuzzy on the details.) Anyway, I can't imagine more than 15-20 Top 10s being posted in the near future. If we had more, we could just link a page 2, and so on. I really don't see so many users doing it.
A far-out idea: If a lot of users were posting Top 10s, a way could be found to keep current users' or popular Top 10s near the top of the list, maybe by giving a list weight depending on how many people clicked its links - or something as insanely complicated, I'm sure.
