BURNHAM BEECHES (Free verse) by longships
Leaves drift lazily as rain on the living soil,
Crackling branches break an unreal silence.
Fallen trunks lie buried beneath a carpet of velvet moss,
The leaf-covered earth shifts as feet saunter on.
Under the canopy of branches I view life in a different light,
The brilliance of colours utterly entrancing.
I steal the freedom offered for the moment,
As I become lost.
Every second worth being lost.
I stand beside a solitary giant.
And although I can not tell you its name,
It leaves impressions of the past on its crumpled bark.
Flowing tails of many stories since the day it sprang from the soil.
I will soon disappear from the unreality of this freedom,
The trees?
