Butler Street YMCA Christmas Party, 1943 (Free verse) by thing1
I sat on my mother's lap
in my new pair of red coveralls and red sweater.
After eating my chocolate icecream and pound cake,
I was ready for that delectable holiday treat.
My big sister, Phylicia, came from across the room.
She was playing with Ethel when Mama called her.
She was wearing a pretty green knee-length dress,
white socks with a little slouch at the ankle,
and black suede shoes with a quarter inch heel.
Mama asked her with her strawberry sweet voice,
"Could you go get Marion some egg nog?"
My eyes lit up with the sound of those two words.
I remember Phylicia walking steadily
from the table over there by Ethel's Mama
with a big paper cup with a pink rose and a pink trim.
She leaned slowly over and said,
"Here Marion, here's your egg nog!"
I took the cup with a low thank you
and enjoyed every gulp of that smooth, creamy drink.
I finished my cup.
Happy, with a big grin on my face,
I looked at my Mama and said, "Ah!"
She gazed at me, chuckled her motherly chuckle
and wiped an egg nog mustache from my lip.
