Wearing Black, as Memory Dictates (Free verse) by UnityMitford
I loved You Sight unseen
I saw the Man behind the Mask of Power;
I found Him keen and appealing
And so started in my Scheming
To know You
When You spoke of your Home,
The Sanctity of your Vision
And the Purity of your Dreams
Made Them seem
Less extreme than Others deemed
As a Lamb I followed, eager to please
I wrapped Myself in Furs and Finery
And utilized all the Guile I knew:
I learned your Tongue,
I drank your Wine and
Pried at your well-pressed Edges
With my feminine Wiles
Hypnotized by your Eyes
I would freeze in their icy Stare
But when You held Me thus,
Brazen and distant and
Chaste in their Gaze
A Fury trapped within ignited,
And excited in a Half-step
I rushed in
What a Sight We must have been at Parties:
You, the awkward, aged Schoolboy
Disarmingly charming with your parlor Tricks
And I, a too-wise Student,
Aristocratically Arrogant and Detached,
Magnetized by your Side, and
Giddy with the Thrill of this Company
Did you know I would die for You?
Did your furrowed Brow crease anew
When you heard the News
That your Planes flew over, and
My Word held True?
Auf Wiedersehen, Adolf.
Adieu.
