The Elephant Olympics (Free verse) by Yardbird
I was sitting in a book shop, And I found a marvellous book Titled 'Mysteries of Nature' - I felt it deserved a look! Yet for all its charm and knowledge It served only to displease, For in it was this shocking phase: "Elephants have no knees!" In my mind's eye I conjured up A most horrific scene. Of elephants being banned from sports Because "it looks obscene, For pachyderms in leotards Being lifted with a crane, 'Cos they're trying to do the high jump And their legs can't take the strain!" I ran my local council up To voice my consternation, And that I'd devised a plan to end This awful situation! And so my brainchild came to life From just one fevered thought - The Elephant Olympics, A landmark move for sport! The rules have been updated To accomodate the beasts, Some games have been completely changed Or tweaked, to say the least. The high jump's now the low walk, Seeing as jumping's off the cards The relay's quite protracted - Eighty hours per seven yards! The whole event's a winner, Thanks to our toil and dedication! We're trying Penguin Skittles next - Now where's my medication?

Up the ladder: Ouch
Down the ladder: Some Things

Cheers to the both of you, and thanks for overlooking the typo in line 7 - the last word, 'phase' should actually read as 'phrase'. Just thought I'd clear that one up now.

This must be one of the greatest attacks on political correctness I've ever read. We need more like this. Cheers!

Why do you think they have trunks? No, wait, sorry, I've gone too far...

Wonderful fun. Is 'ran my local council up' supposed to be 'rang my local...'? Ok, now I'm nitpicking.
Great fun.

The elephant is crouching by bending its knees, which are high up the leg because of the hoof-like feet of the elephant. No knees are visible, and I only said they cannot jump. Did I say anything about them not crouching? Pay attention next time.

No, as much as I hate to say it, DA has a valid point here. The elephant in question is clearly crouching, which would imply it has knees. And the function of knees is not only to help up jump, but to crouch. And walk. So how can an elephant crouch and walk when it has knees? It's legs have to bend don't they?

I revise that previous statement:how can a elaphant crouch and walk with NO knees.

Cleverdevice has just pointed out my foolishness. The elaphant in question is in fact leaning on it's wrists. There are no knees. I apologise for wasting your time.

Actually I have just thought, are knees defined by knee-caps? Or just the joint between femur and the tibia and fibula? Obviously knees depend on the back legs so your picture is inconclusive. Can you find a picture of an elephants back legs? If you visit www.talkorigins.org/faqs/sauropods-structural.html#limbs I think you can actually quite clearly make out the patella, or the knee cap bone. In conclusion, I would now say that although elephants have knee-caps, they still cannot jump because of the sheer mass these wonderful beasts have.

This is very funny indeed. But the medication joke is a cheap ending not up to the standard of the rest.

Apologies. You're right - it does come as a bit out-of-the-blue. Point taken - I'll try and make amendments post haste.
