Possibilities (Free verse) by Nicholas Jones
On a dreary and sleepless night I think of the works that I might write: A beautiful epic of great import Comprising quatrains about life in Stockport A verse history of the global Marxist left A tragi-comic ode on Tony Hancock's death. A sonnet sequence about revolution Or Fermat's Last Theorum and its solution. A compelling exploration of modern society A sestina concerning Freudian psychiatry. A villanelle dealing with death and depression Couplets denouncing a tyrant's repression. A poem of praise to the great McGonagall The rhymes rubber ball with bugger all. They tell me to write about what I know To hell with that, I have too many things to show And too many arrows in my bow.

Up the ladder: The Bicycle Rider
Down the ladder: one man opponent

The proverbial embarrassment of riches. I'd start with Stockport.

Maybe I will. It has a viaduct that is the largest structure in Europe made of brick. As you can see, I am fiercely protective of my home town. Personally, I fancy the Tony Hancock one.

I feel the same way about Slough - the largest light industrial estate in Europe, no less. And the Mars Bar factory. And Willima Herschel discovered uranus while living there. And, and, and The Office is based there. And that's it.

Stockport has the largest parish church in England. And William Cobbett, who repealed the Corn Laws or something, was MP. Oh, and Fred Perry was born there. What a place.

By the way, I never really got the office. It's very clever, but just not funny. The League of Gentlemen is much better.

I love The Office. It is so much like, well, my office. I never really watch League of Gentleman because my wife is so mortally afraid of Papa Lazarou. She didn't sleep for a whole night after that episode.

Papa Lazarou was very scary. Perhaps I would like the office more if I'd ever worked in an office.

You're my wife now, Dave.

Just be very glad my wife isn't around to hear you say that

in your bow? or in your quiver? otherwise very nice. but that bit threw me.

Yes, it probably should be quiver, but that doesn't rhyme.

What a load of rubbish, however it does rhyme.

It's meant to be a load of rubbish. At least I didn't nick it from the Kinks.

Perhaps I was impersonating the great McGonagall and his improbable rhymes.

The stronger your girders you do build
The less chance you have of being killed

I fail to see how you can write about anything other than that which you know, even a complete fantasy is known in some way by the time it is written.

Ah well that is just me.

People always say, as advice to people who want to write, 'write about what you know'. But that's really limiting - you should write about whatever you're capable of imagining.
