Monsters (Lyric) by wilco
Cigarettes hang like fireflies
in the dark where monsters lie
in wait for conscious decision
to fall beneath neon lights.
Why are things so strange when I go downtown for a drink?
And why do they always say that drugs are the only reprieve from the
pain?
To all my friends, Iâd like to say I love you.
All of this constant revision
of freedom and all that it brings
is cruel as the boys in the schoolyard
who separate flies from their wings.
Nothing constricts like the struggle
of tryinâ to live like we do;
day to day, paycheck to paycheck
and always with nothing to lose.
Why are things so strange when I go downtown for a drink?
And why do they always say that drugs are the only relief from the pain?
To all my friends, Iâd like to say I love you.
The call of the monsters is stronger
than any womanâs perfume;
And baptismâs only for sinners
that live the way we do.
Why does it seem so strange when I go downtown in the morning?
And why do they always say that drugs are the only release from the pain?
To all my friends, Iâd like to say I miss you every day
but I canât change.
