Prejudice and Racism (Free verse) by TLRufener
So many comment On the world today How all the corruption Is here to stay Prejudice and racism Cloud over the skies And all the adults do Is wonder why They wine and complain As nothing ever changes But it is all their fault It passes down the ages Children look up To see examples of truth Adults need to look down To see words of proof Look at the children As they happily play There is nothing there To stand in their way No one has told them Not to play with new friends They’ve never heard how important The color of your skin is Black and white Yellow and red They have no false truths Held strong in their heads Skin makes no matter To America’s children Until the adults Change their thought patterns It is the adults Who corrupt the youth It is the adults Who replace innocence with false truths If ever they complain About the world today They should realize if nothing is done Prejudice and racism are here to stay

If there was a black kid on the island maybe Piggy would have stood a chance.

How did you make it from "Skin doesn't matter to America's children" to "Prejudice and racism are here to stay"? Did it hurt?

Children are not born racist; they have to learn it. Since most of them are taught racism, by the time they grow up it doesn't go away.

I think William Golding might disagree. Throw a bunch of white kids and one black kid on a deserted island without adults and the black kid'll be dead in a year.

Sometimes we can overcome the expected and create acceptance.

Do you believe children have the power not to learn what they're taught?

Look who's asking the questions now.
