LIFELINE (Lyric) by outofdarkness138
a river inside breaks free the inner peace shatters in time all alone i want to honor thee struck down in the hour cut at the prime hey! can you hear me calling you hey! i'm all alone and don't know what to do send me some help throw me a line my life a shambles brought by me your coming to help, but not in time i'm a living prison, i only want to be free hey! can you hear me scream to you hey! you want to help but there's nothing you can do a burdened soul in need of healing stumbles now unkempt and abandoned all out now torment no feeling fallin head first denied and slandered hey! i no longer need you hey! i'm lost and fading from you lost all hope put it down no where to turn i'm at the end

Up the ladder: Stuck
Down the ladder: frustration

When a dying person realizes the futility and knows the person he's crying out to wants to help but there's nothing she can do, then you are near the end. Well said, if that's what you mean.

Leave out "thee" though.

This one's better than your other lyric, but I definitely agree with D. - leave out 'thee'. This isn't a Cohen masterpiece, so it doesn't fit the mood of the piece.
'A river inside breaks free' is a damn good line.
