Horseflies and Mayflies, Incessant Today (Free verse) by Christof
The priest's bay mare in the stable block Is distant; the beating of the clock Marks out the months in longshanked stride Since the Father died. And now the new priest comes by car And brings the curate to bless the scar That marks the spot of the jagged chip That cleaves my hip. It isn't much to miss, but still The horse's hooves in their four-square drill Fought the rule of the fragile priest So I thought of peace But the horseflies and mayflies are incessant today With nothing resisting the buzz of their play.

Up the ladder: uh oh

You've got a natural classic style. I picture a stable-hand, fond of his master, who lost his spritual guidance and his job all in one blow. More of that erotic tension found in "the red shoes". The mare scarred him but he loves and misses her. Because she is strong and potentionally dangerous, but willing to please. There's a beauty beyond telling in that. To tame a gorgeous beast, be able to stand near it, and befriend it is thrilling. Lines 11 & 12 are my favorites, but I can't aticulate why. Ends well, with the insects accentuating his void.
