The Fence (Free verse) by TLRufener
I stand at a distance From this far-away gate; And I wonder if there is truth To the idea of fate. As I walk down the path That follows the fence, I wonder if there is someway That we could make amends. As I continue along, The distance between us grows; I have dropped behind me your gift Of the sweetest pink rose. I have discovered that you Are no longer mine, So I will keep to myself And try to remember any of our happier times. I realize now That the gate is closed, Where my journey will end I do not know. All I can conjure Are thoughts of you, I will never convince my heart That your love was untrue. Someday and somewhere You will realize, That the best of you life Is walking out of your sight. I hope that somewhere In another place and time, That in some other life You will be mine. I can only imagine What the future will hold, Since the nearest I can see Is so very dark and cold. The whole of your soul Will someday see, That the love of your life And the warmth of your heart was me.

Up the ladder: sweet kissing me there
Down the ladder: Step Up

They never see us 'till it's too late. I miss not being loved, but....hell, I have nothing to give but myself-and I'm not sure that's enough.
