The Mask (Free verse) by Drifting Shadow
The mask, gives so much, takes so much, Your mask becomes the world you live in, My mask, the world I wish to impose on you. A mask is never as pretty as the face behind it. The mask, blinkers vision, The mask, speaks masked truth, Hears only lies. The mask. The mask, both slave driver and slave, Chained to illusion. Remaining chained to illusion, Long after illusions fallen. For the mask is the guardian of illusion, And the guardian of the face beneath, Illusions will burn when the eyes can take it, When the eyes can take the blinding flashes, Will the mask fall off? How will you know it has fallen? If you cling to your ego Like a blanket of protection? Pull the blanket over your head, And the demons will still find you, Cloth no match for tooth and talon. But for the demons are illusion, They wish to eat your mask, They cannot eat your face, that is real. There is nothing to fear.

Up the ladder: Squalid
Down the ladder: Resume
