Midnight in the Garden (Sonnet) by Cha no Onna

My child, you are cold, bare, lost and alone In this wilderness! Don't be afraid; my Skin is not like yours but thoughts the same. No? Why shrink you from my touch and seek the sky? Forbidden? But what's the harm? I cannot Deceive you, for you are flesh of mine and I will you no ill. What have you been taught? Can you think for yourself? Why is it banned? How can it hurt one who does not know pain; Indeed, knows naught but fruitless, lustful sow And grazing. He knew me too; I would fain Raise you from stagnation. I give choice. Know -- Innocence is death, eat life and succumb; Knowledge first, and then grow to wisdom.
