The Santa Anna's fire and red sun (Free verse) by Bachus

An eerie red filters through windows, people, pets & wild things I haven't seen the sky in two weeks The mountains that I was born under are as black as coal with a million crucifixes and lonely chimneys still holding onto something underneath three feet of ash and two hundred years of burnt pine fodder and brush. The creeks and rivers I fished as a boy run mud brown and molasses slow. A fire camp prisoner sits on a boulder overlooking the San Gabriel Valley and his possible run to freedom. But all would see his get away. Just as all can see the flame beast racing unhindered towards Big Bear. 11,000 firefighters many of which are prison inmates trained for this. Hand in hand with freemen and victims The ones that serve their time won't even be able to become firefighters in the free world due to their record. Killers against a truer killer. Rapists against a truer rapist. This fire has no heart. This wind tells it so.
