When can we expect a POEM/COMMENT TEXT SEARCH?
nentwined @ 66.92.183.34 > zodiac | 18-Apr-04/5:04 PM | Reply
When I come up with a way for them to not flood the system. :)

They'd do that? That sounds terrible! Actually, I have no idea what you mean, having made a point of never learning anything with a practical application.

Do you mean because _so_many_people_ would perform them?

Freeform text searches are kind of expensive to start with, when you're not doing anything in particular to speed them up (like periodically dumping every "word" of a poem/comment into some sort of lookup table). There are a lot of long poems and long comments in the database.

Then again, a search for 'the' (matches tHe and TheRe) gives 38,634 hits in the span of 939.89 msec. That's not so bad, really. The next question would be how to sort and page through those, but I could do something 'stupid' easily enough (like sorting by date entered into the system, showing up to... 100 results at a time or something).

Hmm.
You could provide a complete copy of the poemeranker archives by email on request, and let the user do their own fucking text processing to their heart's content. How big is bzip2ed text?
Speaking of archives, do you happen to have saved the vipersna/Journey debacle? I'm trying to collect leaving rants, and that was one of the biggest bust-ups ever, but it was deleted before I thought to save a copy. Thanks so fucking much.

It probably exists, but I wouldn't know where to go looking for it. but I know what you mean--I keep happening upon waybackmachine archives of things I'd completely forgotten about.

If you type "leaving" into the new comment search engine, you get hits for something deleted on 5-Nov-03 but the comments don't show up in anyone's regular comments page. That's the time when -=D_A=- wrote: "Oh man, I hardly ever get to tick the leaving rant box. This is almost certainly the poeme with the highest mediocrity score of all time. Sir, I pull down my trousers and salute you."

You also get horus running ItalyAngel off on a deleted poem around 4-Oct-03. And "Poem for Preps" by Brittanyy.

Also, the search terms "goodbye" and "good-bye" look really promising.

Actually, the Vipersna thing is still there. Type "Vipersna" in the comment search.

Genius!
It's so useful! Try entering "Watson" in the comment search!

I tried to remove that gay laundry poeme from my favourites list, resulting in the following disgrace:
