"By your side" (Free verse) by jontod
There was a time when I traveled this road alone. Wide and broad was its
path, and many others followed alone going the same way. I just assumed
and figured this must be the way. But the longer I traveled this road; I
began to look to the right and to the left of me. I noticed people lying
on the ground. But like so many of us do, I just kept on going, going
along with the crowd. As the travel grew longer, I was still noticing
people to the side of the road broken down and helpless. The only
difference this time, as I looked closer, I realized they were people I
knew, people that I had been traveling with for years. They held their
arms and hands out to me as I passed by, wanting to take what I had to
help them, but I had nothing. They began to claw and tear at me, crying
out insanities. As this continued down the path I walked, I began to
tire. My face was bleeding and my body tired. All hope I had was
slipping fast. Up in the distance I noticed a dead end sign, and the
people to the side of me were no longer people, but mounds of dust. The
winds began to blow and the dust began to blur my path. I looked down to
find I was being covered, covered by the sin that had run its course
over the years of travel down this lonesome road. I soon found myself as
one of those people I used to pass by, holding my arms and hands out in
tears of pain. In my time of desperation, I took out a map I had been
given years prior to this journey. Only this map looked different. This
road was long and narrow and seemed impossible to make. I said to myself,
I cannot travel this road alone, Lord please take my hand and show me
the way. Just then the wind turned and rose me up from the dust I was
becoming and carried me home. As He carried me I asked Him, Lord where
were You?
Right by your side.
