Magazine Promotion (Free verse) by nentwined
Sisyphus knew nothing of the pain
that goes into the promotion of issue
after issue;
Each issue a rock that would take Hercules
to juggle; every six months (or two, or four;
or weeks, if you like) a new rock,
Such that when first you thought it was enough
to distract Cerberus, soon
you need a Hydra and a Hero chopping heads
to find for every one a willing maw
Until you wonder, in idle moments (not that idle moments
are allowed into your mythological metaphor of a life,
inventing contests and finding very few heroes to try them)
whether Homer would have written, could have written
a third tale, breaking the fourth wall,
of his struggles with promotion.
