City Beat (Free verse) by Quarton
Night sounds echo in staccato beats
down city streets as horns blare,
pissed off drivers--sychopant high fivers
with insipid smiles, say their prayers.
But no one listens--no one cares.
Bright lights flicker--whores dicker,
food smells and oyster shells.
Blank stares through vapid eyes,
forsaken pleas--papal decrees,
bloated bellies and silent screams,
hunger ferments nightmare dreams.
Doomsday visions--exorcisms,
women's rights and circumcisions,
veiled faces in public places.
Satanic fright--preachers delight
as neon lights perturb the night.
Lover's sighs--erotic cries,
emotions spent as belief dies.
Mortals probe the star lit skies
in search of meaning in disguise.
Blinking lights frame city sites,
strip tease bars and souped up cars.
Pulpit predicts--holy edicts,
junkies deal while church bells peal.
Eternal lies fuel feel good highs,
ao say your prayers.
But no one listens--no one cares.
