Ancient Devotion (Free verse) by smlink84
Ancient Devotion Upon his knees was he Another aftermath of the fall, Calloused heart and an indifferent mind To a virgin's divine call. "Forgive me" he said Seven times seventy, For amazing grace he gives freely In a heart so filthy. Years had passed as he came to marry, A Child he had of much affection A gift alone of gifts, Of which held satisfaction. An abode of some fantasy And a daughter of envied hope, Yet in the winter wind's passing She had gone stiff and cold. Vacuous nights Were his to partake, Contemplation of Faith he made A possible mistake in hope he faced. Blinding anger took its toll On a faith so feeble, A hope once the foundation of faith All crumbled in an unknown fable. He once again opened The black covered book, The salt from is tears of old Had come to find a nook. “Because he loves me I will rescue him” Said the book now old, And with moistened eyes and a tired heart He fell to his knees and broke. Sob he did in a night so cold For the dew was blood Reflecting his wrongs In light of the Word, new and old.
