A Dream, A Bad One (Other) by jessicazee
A high school, I’m in an old locker room. I have scars on my legs that look like lilies. A bunch if us caravan in an antique Amish-style cart to some outdoor art fair. Dave Raasch’s brother is in a basement room having a party, where John Grundle and Mark Tobin have been fighting for two days straight. Mark has a black eye but he smiles when he opens the door. Someone offers me a bottle of Heineken, which I open with a shark’s tooth. The beer tastes like cinnamon and lemons. Jerral has met someone. From a distance she looks heavy, with a shaved head, and Jerral is straddling her on a lawn chair. I run downstairs to catch them in the act. Then she is a big black woman, and they are sitting on my parent’s red leather couch in a swanky living room. There is a small pile of gifts between them, and Jerral doesn’t speak; he is just gazing at her. I am outraged and very sad, and tell her to leave. I tell her she is a beautiful woman, but I am in love with Jerral, and he is in love with me, so just leave us alone. She disagrees and says Jerral is in love with her now, and he’s the one who is giving the gifts. There’s candy in boxes, Hello Kitty pens and notebooks, flowers.

Down the ladder: Monument
