My Brother's Demons (Free verse) by Istar Ohta
It was no battle, No blood was spilled, No lives were taken, Yet two forces waged war, One of love and light, One of hate and dark. I watched him fall into the void, Consumed by some unseen evil, I was angry at this demon, This thing that made me watch, As my own brother was taken, Devoured by this evil being. Nothing could I give, But the love in heart, Even this was engulfed, Smothered by the darkness, And I heard the demons laughing, Their evil mirth streaming from his eyes. I tried to hide it, To hide the love in my soul, To cover it with violence and hate, But even as I tried, My heart withered away, Again the demons laughed. Tears sting my eyes, Anger clouds my thoughts, Why couldn't it be someone else? Even as I say these words, I realize that by my suffering, Maybe someone else will escape. I cry at this very moment, Not tears of anger, Not tears of hate nor sorrow, But tears of love, As I finally realize that maybe, People will learn. Maybe they will learn what I have, That these demons wound others, Not with swords or bullets, But by hatred, For hate can cut just as deep, As cold steel. Maybe people will learn, To resist these demons, And help me in my fight, My fight to destroy them.
