Paddling West (Free verse) by Dovina
“There is a candle in your heart, ready to be kindled. There is a void in your soul, ready to be filled. You feel it, don’t you?” --Rumi Lighthouse on a glassy wave guides a soul from tempest land deep current summons her to sea again Emblems of an artisan cultivate around her neck disqualify from pity as waves course through her feet Up four flights of luring stairs in paradox topography each step descends to sea again hook lodged painlessly inside a heedless cheek Long dress of many patches waves course through her feet Too many unpatched holes float up from hidden deep yield to muse’s care to sea again Skill born from lack of other skills joins the ranks of circus freaks unique to entertain as waves course through her feet Eyes fall to rumpled folds to eyes of tea and coffee waves of carefree hair await To sea again

Up the ladder: +Painful+
Down the ladder: Stopped Cold

I love the epigraph--it sets the tone of the poem beautifully. Nice work.
