Nine (Free verse) by MacFrantic
Nine stood nine From dusk to dusk Each barrel weathered Red with rust A hundred more Stood 'cross the field Preparing for the nine to yield Laughter burst from those Outnumbered Taunting While the hundred slumbered One awoke And stirred his brethren Rushing to his side came seven Nine watched eight Alert and leering Perched upside their bunker Jeering Raging at their foes' display They raised their guns And fired away Nine stood nine In smoke depleted Not one soldier thus defeated Silence broke Eights shots One sound Fell seven bodies to the ground One of nine Stepped nine times toward He knelt And aimed his hallowed sword The last upturned to size the score One bullet Sent him to the floor All this racket pulled the masses To the front With arms came asses Braying At the sight beheld Ninety-two Found each breath held To fight They thought Would be this fate For one still knelt across the way His rifle pointed Right and true No man raised his weapon too Back to sleep Not one small noise Grown children frightened By death's toys In their bunker Faint hearts swooned While lions roar beneath the moon Nine stood nine For one more night Rivals Vanished in the light On nine marched Across the field And laughed to watch a hundred yield

Down the ladder: I know what I meant

Goes on a bit but how it all connects stanza to stanza plus the fact that it engaged me has to be thumbs up and not two fingers.

Reads well.
