Bête Black (Free verse) by Enkidu
Mary-Ann draws pentagrams She mumbles in her REM Yesterday she dug my head Poured the dregs upon my bed Sure she whispers sweet untruth Reads her Faulkner on the roof Sure she can't arouse a smile Prefers to bathe in sodden soil Bantam girl of twenty-eight Smokes her Marlboros by the lake Whimsy passes from her lips Vignettes adorn her winsome hips Imposter harlot reeks of home Births a child of salt and stone War with night's bedarkened star Leaves the heavens shorn apart Mary-Ann draws pentagrams She mumbles in her REM Yesterday she dug my head Poured the dregs upon my bed

Up the ladder: conscience
Down the ladder: Councillor Nev
