The Debt. (Prose Poem) by ObsequiousGem
I sit here and wonder about you as I feel the soft wind blow
I don't understand why you didn't want to let anyone know
You should've known we all cared even if we didn't say so
What was so terrible in this world that made you want to go?
I never saw the monster you thought you'd surely come to be
how many times did I remind you that you could always talk to me
why did your sadness overshadow the truth so you didn't see
was your soul so restless you felt you should set it completely free?
Didn't you take the time to try and look at what hadn't been shown
your actions would be so selfish and they'd cut us all to the bone
we cared enough and we could've helped you if only we had known
did we fail you in such a way to deserve a lifetime at your headstone?
Now I sit right next to your gravestone today just letting these tears
fall
trying to see such sorrow so enormous that it caused you to feel so
small
puzzled as to what beckoned you to leave us quickly just to answer its
call
why is it that the thought of you that's left behind must be painful for
us all?
I stand up from the grass in anger now and face the wind in disgust
I shout into it at the top of my lungs, "Who was it that you couldn't
trust?!"
Then I realize at that moment that you couldn't bear a world so unjust
you've left us now to mourn you as time turns your empty shell into dust.
Within my heart I bury the pain as deep as I had buried you the other
day
And within these feelings of pain and sorrow I'm without sweet words to
say
For though you're gone now my life hasn't stopped so therefore I will
not stay
Did it ever occur to you that you would leave an emotional debt for all
of us to pay?
