A Dark Account of History (Free verse) by D. $ Fontera
Cavemen played stone bells Shamen spelled to sick heads The journeyman cut his flag Into soft pieces Warlords conquered heroes And shale knights yielded to snow A hundred Winters Each slow and long Bards called out "Elizabeth!" Philosphers broke open casks And drank to be easy A light pondering Steel clad warriors Guns to shame a spear Wrought metallic fire On foreign inland villages Waves of men The hearts that find us so Settle disputes to destroy The binds of tyrants We at peace Native to the world only Find hard times in forgiveness And losses far and plenty

Down the ladder: A Lover's Lament
