Midnight Questions (Free verse) by TLRufener
Have you ever taken a step back And really looked at your life? Did you ever figure out that it was perfect? Did you ever wonder why? In that moment, What questions crossed your mind? Have you ever taken the time to think What it was that you left behind? When did it hit you That you had everything? Did you hesitate and wonder What other gifts your life could bring? After the white dove Flew quickly overhead, Then did you discover That at last you were dead? When did the glorious angels Come down to take your soul away? Did you know that they were coming? Did you ask them if you could stay? What great crime did you commit To deserve such a severe punishment? What great deed did you complete To deserve such a reward that heaven sent? Did you ever stop and think How many people would mourn you and cry? Why didn’t you try and beat the odds If you didn’t have to die? Who came to you with the message That your work on Earth was done? What creature took you to the clouds And now lets you live forever on? Did you ever take that step back And really look at your life? Did you hear the words I said? Did you ever hear me cry?

I answered in the negative or with unconcern to most of your questions, but "How many people would mourn you and cry?" is worthy of thought.
