The Layer of Black (Free verse) by emilyowey
The layer of black Underneath my skin Is asking for an audience The mask over my face Can no longer hold me in The veil no longer blinds me The curtain’s torn and tattered Exposure, nakedness, Light comes in I chase the darkness, My only friend I grasp for any remnant Of the hiding place Of the staleness of secrecy

Up the ladder: Guilt
Down the ladder: iPod

This is powerful and I know exactly what you mean. Come out and spill whatever you have to! But I like this.

As a student I feel obliged to be wracked with guilt at not being black, impoverished or in prison (or any combination thereof)
