THEIR MOCCASINS (Free verse) by ani
THEIR MOCCASINS
Two pairs of worn moccasins
Are put up high on the shelf
As if they are on display
For only the eyes to see
No hands will touch them
Made by an Indian Princess
That wore her pair everyday
She met her sweetheart
When she was still young at heart
When they married,
She made him a pair to match hers
Turquoise beads
Every other one was white
They wore them till the end
Of her days
Before she died,
She took her moccasins from her tired feet
Asked him to take good care of them for her
They never touched the Red earth again
Nor did his
He put them on the highest shelf
So no one could ever touch them
But could see them with their wondrous eyes
When he dies someday,
He will take them along
So when he sees her off in that far horizon,
They can put them on
And walk together in the village
Of the Great Beyond
