Parking Lot (Free verse) by uncannydanny

In the passenger seat of our Cavalier with the chainlink steering wheel, tapping at the air bubbles under the purple tinted window gels, I ask her to try to remember what summer used to mean. Sitting on the kicked in trunk in the IKEA parking lot, playing with the yellow mesh bag left in a cart near our Cavalier, I think about how much I hated summer camp. Packing the build your own bookcase and closing the backdoor, Jamie says she wants to go to the Statue of Liberty; we see it from the top of our street every day on the way to work, and I try to forget falling down the stairs at the monument years ago.?? I tell her I want to go drag racing in Graves End. There's sadness in her eyes when she says okay. ?? I tell her I love her and she perks up, asking if we can fill the super soaker with bleach. ?? Of course, I reply. 'Just like Vince Coleman.' ?? If she blinds me tonight with the watergun I don't care what they'll say, I'm spending my life with her. The rest of the drive I agree with myself at my conclusion in the parking lot. The wind feels good against my face. ?? It makes ripples in the window tint. ?? I practice keeping my hands away from pulling at it, but sometimes it's hard. ?? Then our Cavalier with the chainlink steering wheel that we bought at the police auction smokes from under the hood. I tell Jamie maybe we ought to pull over. But it's illegal to pull over on the Jersey Turnpike.?? We keep going until it's so hot in the car that we're removing clothes, shoes, eyeglasses, false teeth, wigs, wallets; we throw them all on the highway.?? Turning around in our seats reveals the other cars stopping, their drivers running to examine our belongings strewn across four lanes. The tolltakers wave us through; they want a piece of the action back up the road.?? Jamie laughs and I tell her I like her laugh and we're having a good time. We????re back in the apartment, our Cavalier with the chainlink steering wheel outside on the sidewalk where it will die sometime in the night. We will be thinking of other things, like each other and how today will always remind us of what summer means.

the material involved in this piece is definitely savory, but the ??? shit has to go danny..if you fix it i'll give you an eight just for the false teeth and wig jettison.
