Going Away to Fight a War (Lyric) by wilco
Remember that June day?
The summer solstice on itâs way
to remind us of the time
we sat and watched the film.
It wasnât very good, but still
it keeps playing in my mind.
I hope you understand
the reasons I canât explain again
for why I have to leave.
And if the engine turns
thereâll be no more fuel to burn
by the time I make it home.
I hope you recognize my eyes
in airwaves coming through the tides
and when you see me waving to you on the evening news.
All along the street
retired kite strings fill the trees
that we planted long ago
in the hopes that theyâd grow tall
and create a sturdy wall
behind which weâd grow old.
If you grow tired of waiting
as that summer sun is setting
take the first flight back home.
And donât forget to pack a coat.
It gets cold on the East coast
as the leaves are turning brown.
I hope you recognize my eyes
in airwaves coming through the tides
and when you see me waving to you on the evening news.
