Because to Live I Must (Free verse) by TLRufener

Father do not forgive me Because to live I must sin This story is quite lengthy With the main points I will begin You may have confirmed my words But you can never have my heart You’re devoted to your precious god Our beliefs are worlds apart The part I always play Is just a thick façade to the truth I have chosen my own path One in which you will not approve On this the day of Sunday In which I was confirmed I am in the state of mortal sin At least to what you have learned Alone at night I cast my spells I do not pray to your Jesus Christ My heart lies with the old ways But my family would never see it right Because to live I must hide Or be faced with the desertion I must remain a Closet Witch Until I have the courage to pull back the curtain

points for the laugh. what the witch in your poem is really saying is that she/he doesn't really believe in the old ways...or else the curtain would already be pulled away (such is the case with true believers).
