Sorry about the recent slowness of the site. Since I moved all of my sites to a new server early 2005, I apparently forgot about the whole "maintenance of the database" thing, which postgresql really, really needs. Poemranker should be much, much zippier now. As should the rest of my server--it was getting so that it was slow to type, just because I'd been treating postgresql so poorly.

Yep, it never has worked with IE, even with Java activated. Now it doesn't work with Netscape either. Tried it on a Mac with Safari - no luck there either. Yep it's broke alright.
The connection broken thing is that I forgot to restart it after restarting tomcat. How the hell do I start it up again? Okay, half hour later or so and I figured that out, though as ever I don't know how it was working at all to begin with, before.
However, I would say your problem with IE has to do with your java installation. You might try uninstalling and reinstalling your JRE, or whatnot. Maybe. I know it's always worked for me, across computers (in IE).

VACUUM FULL ANALYZE; you idiot. For guaranteed mediocre performance 24/7, I recommend turning on the auto-vacuum daemon then hiding in the nearest cupboard with some underpants on your head.
I think the auto-vacuum is only 8.0+ or some such? I'm still in the dark ages, though not as dark as they were before the server move last year. I'm on 7.4.
In that case you'll have to ignore the auto-vacuum part and just sit in a cupboard with some underpants on your head. I'm sorry, that's the best I can do.
As part of the site's downtime I learned that the earlier versions of postgresql (like the one currently running) allow invalid unicode characters, and later versions of postgresql (like the non-sucktastic 8.1) completely barf on such. Upgrading will be the proverbial great inhalation.
