I noticed that when I deleted a comment (my own), the comment counter didn't go down and remained on the same value as before. Perhaps this could be fixed? It's not really significant, just a little annoying now and then.

That's actually on purpose.

It shows which authors delete things, give or take. The scars of battles, etc.
Sometimes, yes. But I think the counter is incremented more often because a user deletes his/her own comment because mistakes are easier noticed after hitting "Submit", and that is caused in part by the smallness of the text entry box. Either way, it's a minor issue.
