Is there something to be done about down voting... it looks like some people vote zero on everyones poems...

well... if they vote zero on everyone, it should just about even out. ;)

Try writing better poems and see what happens.

For every goose egg you get, give yourself a 10, that'll at least average out to a 5. Don't give yourself too many tens though or people will accuse you of being a chronic masturbator.
