i am wondering how the person who submitted poem after me managed to get over 40 hits and 8 comments when there wasnt anyone logged on when they submitted apart from myself and 1 other person over the period of 3hrs??? strange no?

Yes. Zzinnia - <~> - was resubmitting old posts. You keep your comments and hits that way, but lose your votes.

The best way to get votes and comments on your poems, pollywolly, is to vote on others'. Everybody wants votes/comments; nobody wants to give them. Check the 20 Most Recent poems, see who's currently posting, comment. You'll probably get some comments back. Give them the kind of critique you'd like to get.

Sure. If you'd like an easy critique, full of bubbly sunshine, give them that. If you'd like real criticism, try giving that. That's what I meant.
