My Lie (Free verse) by josiefiend
What would I have done? I look at myself, Playing with my cuticles absentmindedly in class until They bleed, And now I’m in the shit. I think I would be chanting a mantra to keep my head. This is my rifle, There are many like it but this one is mine… So maybe I hear the orders to kill everyone and Maybe I don’t, But then I look at the gun in my hand and it’s time to go so we’re moving fast and it is loud in the air in my chest in my ears and do I think of the girl I left back home as I shoot the first one in the face? This is my rifle, this is my gun, This is for fighting, this is for fun. No not me never I’m not like that I would Stop-- I have to believe, that I could stop. We all would like to think We could have stopped, When sons of liberty, dreaming of stars, stripes and apple pie Could not.
